Bhuvneshwar Kumar Extends Purple Cap Lead as Virat Kohli and KL Rahul Climb Orange Cap Standings

The fans were hooked on the day of the two IPL 2026 matches on May 17, and by the end of the day, the individual award races were clearer. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was again leading with the wickets, KL Rahul had a match-winning knock for Delhi Capitals, and Virat Kohli was one step closer to the Orange Cap leaders with another composed knock in the hills of Dharamsala. A full day of cricket and the season’s best players ensured that their voices were heard.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar Tightens His Grip on the Purple Cap

Bhuvneshwar Kumar of Royal Challengers Bengaluru currently leads the Purple Cap table with 24 wickets after another productive outing against Punjab Kings. He dismissed openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh in his first and third overs, returning figures of 2 for 38. It was a slightly expensive day, with an economy of 9.50 against his season economy of 7.70, but the wickets were what mattered.

His tally of 24 wickets puts him three ahead of second-placed Kagiso Rabada of Gujarat Titans and five clear of Anshul Kamboj of Chennai Super Kings. At this stage of the tournament, that kind of cushion is significant. Rabada has taken 21 wickets, while Kamboj sits on 19.

Among the other bowlers in the mix, Jofra Archer returned 2 for 35 in the evening match, bouncing back after three consecutive games where he took just two wickets and was expensive. He moved to fourth place on the table with 17 wickets.

Kohli Closes In on the Top Two While Rahul Breaks Into the Top Four

Virat Kohli scored 58 off 37 balls as RCB beat Punjab Kings, moving to 542 runs for the season. He is now just behind Gujarat Titans openers B Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill, who lead the table with 554 and 552 runs respectively.

Kohli’s consistency remains the story of his season. He averages 54.20 with a strike rate of 164.74, having scored one century and four fifties in 13 innings. Those numbers place him among the most reliable batters in the competition this year.

In the second match of the day, KL Rahul scored 56 off 42 balls for Delhi Capitals against Rajasthan Royals. Those runs pushed him to 533 for the season, moving him into fourth place and dropping Heinrich Klaasen of Sunrisers Hyderabad to fifth.

Sooryavanshi and Connolly Also Make Their Mark

The two matches also saw strong contributions from players further down the standings. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi hit 46 off 21 balls for Rajasthan Royals and now has 486 runs for the season, placing him sixth on the Orange Cap table.

His strike rate of 234.78 is the highest among the top run-scorers this season, making him one of the most destructive openers in the tournament. Although Rajasthan lost the game, Sooryavanshi’s individual form has been exceptional throughout.

Cooper Connolly of Punjab Kings scored 37 off 22 balls in the defeat to RCB, taking him to 473 runs and eighth place on the Orange Cap standings.

With the playoff race tightening and several matches still remaining, the individual battles for the Orange and Purple Caps are equally competitive. Bhuvneshwar looks difficult to catch with the ball, while the top of the batting charts remains tight enough for the standings to shift with any single strong performance.
