England vs New Zealand Sets New Attendance Record for Women’s T20 World Cup Group Stage Match

A record-breaking crowd of 21,018 spectators appeared at the Oval to watch England defeat New Zealand by nine wickets on 27 June 2026. This massive turnout set a new world record for the highest attendance at a group stage match in the history of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.

England chased down a target of 164 runs with 16 balls to spare to remain unbeaten in the tournament. This result officially knocked the defending champions, New Zealand, out of the competition.

Huge Crowd Witnesses History at The Oval

The atmosphere at The Oval in London reached new heights as fans flocked to see the two cricket giants face off. The official attendance of 21,018 surpassed the previous record set earlier in this tournament. During the opening week, 18,814 fans attended the India vs Pakistan match at Edgbaston. Consequently, this latest figure proves that the popularity of women’s cricket is growing faster than ever before.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that total attendance for the 2026 tournament has now passed 125,000 visitors. This makes the 2026 edition in England and Wales the highest-selling Women’s T20 World Cup in history. Furthermore, pre-tournament ticket sales reached over 145,000 a full month before the first ball was bowled.

Match Summary: England Dominates Defending Champions

New Zealand won the toss and chose to bat. Isabella Gaze and Amelia Kerr started the match with a 70-run opening partnership. But the England bowlers fought back quickly.  England took three wickets in just four balls without giving away a single run.

Sophie Devine tried to rescue the New Zealand innings by smashing 30 runs from only 14 balls. Despite her efforts, New Zealand finished on 163-6 after 20 overs. England needed to score 164 runs to win, which was the joint-highest run chase ever attempted in a Women’s World Cup.

England made the difficult chase look very easy. Opener Danni Wyatt-Hodge led the way with a brilliant unbeaten 89 runs. She shared a massive 128-run partnership with Sophia Dunkley. Dunkley finished on 49 not out as England reached the target in the 18th over.

The End of an Era for New Zealand Cricket

This match marked the end of the international careers for three New Zealand legends. Sophie Devine, Suzie Bates, and Lea Tahuhu all played their final T20 international games for the White Ferns.

Together, these three players made nearly 900 appearances for their country. After the match, the England team formed a guard of honour to show respect as the veterans left the field for the last time. Although New Zealand received a lifeline earlier in the day when Ireland beat the West Indies, they could not beat the unbeaten England side.

Commercial Success of the 2026 World Cup

The huge crowds at matches like England vs New Zealand reflect a global trend. Experts at Deloitte forecast that women’s elite sports will generate more than $3 billion in revenue in 2026. This is a massive 340% increase since 2022.

The ICC raised the prize money for this tournament to $8.76 million, up 10 percent from last year. The winners will earn at least $2.34 million. The investment helps improve stadiums, training and the broadcast experience for fans around the world.
