Unsporting behavior

A court in Oklahoma has charged an ex-Moore Public School District (MPS) Athletic Facilitator with embezzlement after she allegedly stole almost $61,000 from football, basketball, and volleyball tournaments for personal gambling.

six felony counts of embezzlement

Courtney Raegan Walker, 50, appeared before the Cleveland County District Court, where she was charged with six felony counts of embezzlement.

According to an affidavit filed by the Cleveland County District Attorney’s office, an investigation into Walker began on July 1 after the school district reported potential embezzlement to the police.

When confronted by officials, Walker confessed to spending all the stolen money on gambling.

Truth comes out

The Moore Police Department affidavit on Walker after the case was opened on July 1 included multiple incidents that tipped off authorities to the suspect’s embezzlement scheme.

According to court documents, Walker worked for MPS as Athletics Facilitator from July 2022. Walker held that post until the district body placed her on administrative leave last month, prompting her resignation.

The MPD allege Walker’s descent into crime started at a Moore High School girls’ basketball event in August 2024 hosted by the Lady Lions Swish Club.

Investigators allege Walker collected $7,000 but never handed the funds to her district or the Lady Lions despite multiple attempts to recover the money.

According to the MPD affidavit, a partnership between Moore High School and the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association led to Walker overseeing four events for MPS during the 2024-25 school year.

The events were a cheer event that raised $20,000, a volleyball tournament in October bringing in $13,000, a basketball tournament that made $7,000, and a spring track meet that produced $10,000. A spring football league event from April 2 to May 14, 2025, meanwhile, generated $4,000.

Investigators state that Walker never deposited any of the above funds into MPS accounts.

Investigations ongoing

Citing a statement from Moore Public Schools, The Oklahoman reported that MPS learned “this summer” of Walker’s alleged embezzlement and placed her on administrative leave pending a full investigation.

While Walker has resigned, MPS and the police are continuing their investigations.

If charges against Walker stick and she is convicted, she faces heavy financial penalties and significant time in prison.
