The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has arrested a “teenage boy” connected to cyberattacks that brought certain Sin City casinos to a halt in 2023.
While the LVMPD didn’t name any casinos, MGM Resorts International lost an estimated $100m to hackers, while Caesars opted to heed their demands and paid $15m.
Metro took to X to report with news of the boy’s arrest following the FBI’s Las Vegas Cyber Task Force identifying him as a suspect:
In a press release, the LVMP attributed the “sophisticated network intrusions” against Vegas casinos to “an organized cyber threat-actor group known by several names to include, ‘Scattered Spider’, ‘Octo Tempest’, ‘UNC3944, and/or ‘0ktapus’.”
Metro stated the FBI’s Vegas cyber arm took over the hacking investigation “due to the nature of the crime.”

According to the LVMPD, the boy walked into Clark County Juvenile Detention Center last week to turn himself in. Police booked him on multiple charges including three counts of “obtaining and using personal identifying information of another person to harm or impersonate a person.”
Metro officers also charged the boy with one count apiece of extortion, conspiracy to commit extortion, and unlawful acts regarding computers.
