South Africa fast bowler Nandre Burger has been ruled out of the remainder of Major League Cricket 2026 after scans confirmed a recurrence of a stress reaction in his back. Burger was representing Texas Super Kings in the tournament before the injury brought his campaign to a premature end.
The team confirmed in an official statement that Burger will undergo a prolonged period of rest and rehabilitation following the diagnosis. Scans revealed that a pre-existing stress reaction in his back had flared up again, leaving the franchise with no option but to withdraw the 30-year-old from the squad.
Burger Managed Only Two Appearances in His MLC 2026 Campaign
Burger had a limited opportunity to make an impact before the injury struck. He bowled his full quota of overs in the tournament opener against Seattle Orcas and then returned two overs as first-change in the match against San Francisco Unicorns, picking up the wicket of Finn Allen. The day after that second match, Adam Milne replaced him in the playing XI, and his tournament was effectively over.
Texas Super Kings confirmed the diagnosis through scans, which showed the stress reaction in his back was a pre-existing condition that had resurfaced. The franchise did not put a timeline on his recovery, only stating that he would need extended rest before returning to competitive cricket.
Dian Forrester Named as Replacement for Texas Super Kings
Texas Super Kings have named fellow South African Dian Forrester as Burger’s replacement. Forrester made his international debut against New Zealand earlier this year and has played five T20Is for South Africa. As a batting all-rounder, he carries a T20 strike rate of 140 and has taken 14 wickets across 39 T20 matches.
Forrester arrives with recent high-level experience behind him. He toured England as part of South Africa A and featured for Joburg Super Kings in SA20 2025/26. He also joined the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026 as an injury replacement for Jamie Overton. His familiarity with Super Kings setups should help him settle quickly into the Texas camp.
Burger’s Long History of Injury Disruptions in International and Franchise Cricket
The back injury is not new territory for Burger. In October 2024, a lumbar stress reaction ruled him out of the Ireland series and the Bangladesh Tests. That same injury then kept him out of SA20. Even before his South Africa debut, he had dealt with back problems — a lower back injury in November 2021 ended his domestic season and kept him away from cricket for nearly a year before he returned for Western Province.
Last December, a hamstring injury affected his participation in the second ODI against India and ruled him out of the third. Despite that setback, he returned to play 13 matches in IPL 2026 for Rajasthan Royals, finishing with 14 wickets at an average of 31.42 — placing him joint-second in the wickets column for Rajasthan that season. He had also been at Rajasthan the year before as an injury replacement for Sandeep Sharma, but did not feature in a game.
Burger’s recurring injury troubles have made it difficult for him to build any sustained run in international or franchise cricket. His latest setback at MLC 2026 continues a pattern that has repeatedly cut short what could otherwise be consistent appearances at the highest level.
