Sir David Beckham became the first footballer in history to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Friday, June 12, 2026. The ceremony took place in Los Angeles on the same day the United States kicked off its hosting duties for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Few athletes have moved between sport, fashion, and popular culture the way Beckham has, and Friday added another chapter to that story.
Rather than the traditional red carpet, organisers rolled out a green soccer-themed pitch carpet for the event, reflecting Beckham’s identity as a global football icon.
Beckham Makes History as First Footballer on Hollywood Walk of Fame
Beckham received the 2,849th star on the Walk of Fame, joining a list of sporting legends that includes Shaquille O’Neal, Billie Jean King, and Muhammad Ali. He is the first football player to be added to the iconic stretch along Hollywood Boulevard.
Actor Tom Cruise and Victoria Beckham were among the speakers at the ceremony. Cruise described Beckham’s life as “a Hollywood story” built on hard work, determination, and global cultural influence. Victoria Beckham called the timing of the honour fitting, noting that football in the United States is entering one of the most exciting periods in its history.
Beckham himself described the moment as surreal. Speaking at the podium, he said the honour was something a working-class boy from East London could never have imagined. He also addressed his children directly, saying his greatest achievement was making them proud.
A Career That Spanned Continents and Cultures
Over a 20-year playing career, Beckham represented some of the biggest clubs in world football. He won trophies at Manchester United and Real Madrid before moving to LA Galaxy in 2007, a decision that was met with scepticism at the time but ultimately helped accelerate football’s popularity in the United States. He also had stints at AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain.
As England captain, Beckham earned 115 international caps and played at three World Cups. One of his most remembered moments in an England shirt came in 2001, when a curling free-kick against Greece sent the team to the 2002 World Cup. He holds the distinction of being the first English player to win league titles in four different countries.
Beckham’s Life After Playing
After retiring in 2013, Beckham has stayed close to the game as president and co-owner of Inter Miami CF. The club made global headlines in 2023 when Lionel Messi joined the MLS side. Beckham has worked with brands including Adidas, Hugo Boss, and Stella Artois, and appeared in the Netflix series Beckham, which traced his playing career. The film Bend It Like Beckham was also inspired by his story.
In November 2025, King Charles knighted him at Windsor Castle. The Hollywood Walk of Fame star now sits alongside that honour as a marker of how far Beckham has travelled from his East London roots.
