Suzie Bates has signed a domestic contract with Otago, marking her return to the franchise for the first time in two decades. The 38-year-old allrounder retired from international cricket in June, shortly after New Zealand’s group-stage exit at the T20 World Cup.
Her move back to Otago closes a gap that stretches all the way to 2006, the last season she played under the franchise before building an international career spanning more than 20 years.
Bates Returns To Otago After Injury-Hit Season
Bates managed just one one-day appearance for Otago during the 2025-26 domestic season before a tendon injury, picked up while fielding in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield, ruled her out for the rest of the campaign. She missed the Super Smash entirely as a result. With her new contract in place, Bates is set to feature in both the one-day Hallyburton Johnstone Shield and the T20 Super Smash through the upcoming New Zealand home summer. An Otago Cricket release confirmed that she plans to focus her attention fully on the Sparks, the side she has represented across a 23-year domestic career.
At present, Bates is working as women’s batting coach for Sunrisers Leeds in the ongoing Women’s Hundred, operating under head coach Adi Birell. Her coaching role runs alongside her preparation for the New Zealand summer, giving her a dual presence in the game even after stepping away from international duty.
A Contract That Bridges Two Generations
The timing carries its own significance as Bates last held an Otago contract in 2006. It is the same year as Abby Fookes, now a rising batter earning her maiden Otago deal, was born. Otago’s women’s pathway manager, Sarah Tsukigawa, pointed to the value of pairing the two players in the same squad.
She said Fookes stands to learn a great deal from playing alongside someone with Bates’ experience, both on and off the field, and described the young batter’s progress as encouraging for the franchise’s future. Tsukigawa added that Otago considers itself fortunate to have Bates turning out for the Sparks for another season.
Bates’ Record Puts Her Among New Zealand’s Best
Bates leaves international cricket as New Zealand’s all-time leading run-scorer in women’s internationals and the outright top run-scorer in women’s T20Is, records built over more than two decades on the international circuit.
Her return to Otago gives the franchise a direct link to that experience, even as she steps back from the international stage. For a domestic set-up blending emerging talent with senior know-how, her presence adds depth to a squad that already includes contracted players such as Anna Browning, Chloe Deerness and Hannah O’Connor alongside Fookes.
Otago’s women’s programme has also seen movement elsewhere this week, with Central Districts seamer Claudia Green announcing her retirement from the game and Wellington Blaze player Gemma Sims stepping away from professional cricket.
Bates’ decision to sign on, by contrast, keeps one of the country’s most experienced cricketers active on the domestic front as the New Zealand summer approaches.
